Cloudflare has rolled out a major update that converts websites into markdown format, and if you are running AI agents that browse the web, this is something you should implement right away. The core benefit is an advertised 80% reduction in token usage — which translates directly into lower API costs and faster, more efficient agent runs. The idea is straightforward: your agents do not need to load a full HTML page with all its styling, scripts, and layout data. They just need the actual content. Markdown strips all of that away and delivers only what matters. Given that a massive portion of the internet runs on Cloudflare infrastructure, this update has the potential to affect a huge number of sites your agents might be visiting. To put the savings in perspective, real-world testing on the Cloudflare blog showed a 94% size reduction — even better than Cloudflare's own estimate. Implementing this in your own bot is not complicated. You can simply prompt your agent to read the Cloudflare documentation on the feature and have it update its web-fetching logic accordingly. It is worth noting that OpenClaw already includes a built-in tool in its web fetch functionality that converts HTML to markdown, which shows the platform is well-architected for agent efficiency. However, even if your agent has some HTML-to-markdown conversion built in, applying the conversion at the Cloudflare level — closer to the source — adds another layer of reduction before the content even reaches your agent. One important caveat: individual companies that use Cloudflare need to manually enable this feature in their settings. Major sites like Anthropic, OpenAI, Vercel, GitHub, TechCrunch, and Hugging Face are currently still returning plain HTML. So adoption will take time, but the direction is clear. If you are spending real money on agent token usage — and costs can add up fast, sometimes hitting $18 or more per day across coding and agent tasks — even a partial reduction from this feature is meaningful.
